CU-1c-1886-01R Type 2 Cud

Description

Documenting a cud error on the scarcer Type 2 reverse of the 1886 Indian Head Cent, CU-1c-1886-01R records a rim-area die break where a fragment of die steel separated, leaving a featureless raised blob at the corresponding location on struck coins. The 1886 Indian Head Cent is distinctive for featuring two reverse design types within a single year: Type 1, where the last feather of the wreath points between C and A of AMERICA, and Type 2, where it points between I and C. The Type 2 reverse, introduced partway through 1886 production, carried forward into subsequent years and is generally considered the scarcer of the two for this date. Cuds originate at the die rim — the structurally weakest zone — and the "R" suffix confirms this cud appears on the reverse die. This particular cud runs in a small patch west of the wreath just north of 9 o'clock. Indian Head Cents from the 1880s circulated heavily and were produced in quantities that, while substantial for the era, pale in comparison to 20th-century mintages, lending proportional scarcity to documented die errors from this period.
