Description
This circa 1867 brass medal, cataloged as JAB-29, features a portrait of Daniel Webster, the legendary American orator, senator, and Secretary of State who was one of the dominant political figures of the first half of the nineteenth century. Webster's famous defense of the Union — "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable" — resonated powerfully during and after the Civil War, making him a natural subject for Bolen's medallic portraits. Webster served as senator from Massachusetts, Bolen's home state, adding a local connection to the national significance of the subject. The brass composition provides a warm golden tone for this portrait of one of America's greatest speakers. JAB-29 in multiple metals forms one of the more complete sub-sets within the Bolen series, with brass, silver, and white metal all represented.
Rarity Notes
