Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-27, features Andrew Jackson as the "Old Soldier" in copper — the standard base metal version of this presidential portrait design. While the brass version (PCGS #612699) offers a golden appearance, the copper JAB-27 presents Jackson's military portrait with the warm reddish-brown tones characteristic of Bolen's copper medalets. Jackson's image as a military hero was one of the most popular subjects in nineteenth-century American medallic art, and Bolen's contribution to this tradition through JAB-27 demonstrates his engagement with the broader market for presidential portrait pieces. The copper version was the most widely distributed striking of this design, though Bolen's production quantities remained small even for his most popular subjects.
