Description
This circa 1866 white metal medal, cataloged as JAB-23, is the white metal version of Bolen's Springfield Antiquarians design. The white metal composition — a tin-based alloy with a bright silvery appearance — offered an alternative to the more common copper version of this locally themed medal. Bolen produced his medals in multiple metals to create collecting varieties and to accommodate different price points among his collector customers. The Springfield Antiquarians medal holds particular significance within the Bolen series as a direct expression of his personal connection to his community's cultural institutions. White metal versions of JAB-23 are scarcer than copper examples, as Bolen typically produced fewer pieces in this composition. The antiquarian subject matter makes this piece relevant to collectors interested in the history of American collecting institutions as well as Bolen specialists.
