Description
This circa 1865 brass medal, cataloged as JAB-20, features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president who was assassinated on April 14, 1865. Bolen's Lincoln portrait medal was produced during the outpouring of grief and commemorative activity that followed Lincoln's death, when hundreds of medals, tokens, and memorial pieces were created by private die sinkers across the country. Bolen's version, as JAB-20, represents his personal artistic tribute to the fallen president. Lincoln memorial medals from 1865 are among the most collected items in American numismatics, with the Cunningham reference cataloging hundreds of varieties. Bolen's contribution stands out for its quality of engraving and the limited production that characterizes all of his work. The brass composition was one of several metals used for this popular design.
