Coin Details
Description
Charles Magnus Sage, a prominent New York City coin dealer and numismatist active during the 1850s and 1860s, commissioned a series of historical tokens depicting notable buildings, landmarks, and personalities associated with early American and New York history. This brass token, number 1 in the series, features Sir Henry Clinton, the British commander-in-chief during the American Revolution who directed military operations from his New York headquarters. Clinton oversaw the British occupation of New York City from 1778 to 1782, making the city the loyalist capital of the colonies. Sage produced these tokens in multiple metals including copper, brass, and white metal, appealing to the growing community of numismatic collectors in antebellum New York. The series served dual purpose as advertising for Sage's coin business and as collectible historical mementos documenting the colonial and Revolutionary heritage of the city.
Rarity Notes
Brass striking. Sage's Historical Tokens are collected as a complete series. Brass versions are scarcer than copper.
