(c.1850s) Token Louis Kossuth Brass Counter

Coin Details
Description
This brass counter token from circa 1850s features Louis Kossuth, the Hungarian revolutionary leader whose American tour in 1851-52 generated enormous public enthusiasm and a corresponding flood of commemorative merchandise. This variant, described simply as a "Brass Counter" without the "Washington of Hungary" subtitle, may represent a different die variety or a simplified version produced for the general market rather than the specifically themed commemorative trade. Kossuth counter tokens were produced by multiple manufacturers across the Eastern United States, resulting in numerous die varieties that differ in portrait style, inscriptions, and reverse designs. The counter format indicates these pieces were intended for practical use in games and commerce as well as for patriotic display. The brass composition was standard for game counters of the era, providing durability and a gold-like appearance at low cost. The circa 1850s date range allows for production either during the peak of Kossuth mania in 1851-52 or in the years immediately following, when manufacturers continued to use existing dies to satisfy residual demand. Kossuth tokens in all varieties are collected as artifacts of one of the most remarkable episodes of international celebrity in nineteenth-century America.
Rarity Notes
Moderately common. Kossuth brass counters were produced in quantity and survive in substantial numbers. Higher-grade examples with full portrait detail command premium prices.
