Coin Details
Description
This undated gold medal, attributed to approximately 1947, is the American Numismatic Association President's Medal, struck in gold as a mark of the highest office within the organization. The A.N.A. President's Medal was presented to the sitting president of the association, serving as both a badge of office and a lasting memento of service to the nation's foremost numismatic body. The gold composition reflects the prestige of the presidential role within an organization that by the mid-twentieth century had grown to encompass thousands of members across the United States. The American Numismatic Association, chartered by Congress in 1912 under a federal charter that remains unique among hobby organizations, has elected presidents who have included some of the most influential figures in American numismatics. The president's medal in gold represents the apex of the association's medallic tradition, far exceeding in intrinsic value and rarity the bronze and silver convention medals that the organization produced in larger quantities. Few examples of the gold president's medal are known, as production was inherently limited to one per presidential term.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare gold presentation medal. Produced individually for each A.N.A. president, making this among the rarest items in the association's medallic output. Gold examples almost never appear at auction.
