Description
The 2021 John Tyler "1841" silver matte finish medal honors the tenth President of the United States in the Presidential Silver Medal Program. Tyler's accession to the presidency on April 4, 1841, following William Henry Harrison's death after just thirty-one days in office, established the critical precedent that the vice president becomes the actual president — not merely an acting president — upon the chief executive's death. This "Tyler Precedent" would govern eight subsequent presidential successions until it was codified by the Twenty-Fifth Amendment in 1967. Tyler (1790-1862) was a Virginia aristocrat, former governor, and senator who was placed on the Whig ticket in 1840 purely for geographical balance. Once in office, he vetoed virtually the entire Whig legislative program, leading to his expulsion from the party and earning him the derisive nickname "His Accidency." His entire cabinet except Secretary of State Daniel Webster resigned in protest. Despite his political isolation, Tyler achieved significant accomplishments including the Webster-Ashburton Treaty settling the Maine-Canada boundary, the annexation of Texas, and the establishment of the U.S. Weather Bureau. Tyler holds the distinction of having the most children of any president — fifteen across two marriages. He was also the earliest-born president with a living grandchild in modern times, a remarkable span attributable to his second marriage at age 54. The silver matte finish medal captures this complex and consequential figure.
