Description

This bronze medal honors Steve Gleason, the former New Orleans Saints safety who became a national symbol of resilience after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011. Dated 2019 but produced in 2020, the medal commemorates Gleason's extraordinary advocacy for ALS patients and his most famous football moment — the blocked punt against the Atlanta Falcons on September 25, 2006, in the first game played in the Louisiana Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, a play that became an iconic symbol of New Orleans' recovery. Gleason's foundation, Team Gleason, has raised millions of dollars for ALS research and provided assistive technology to thousands of patients. In 2020, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, making him one of the few athletes to receive this highest civilian honor. This bronze medal is a duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal produced by the U.S. Mint for public sale, allowing Americans to own a replica of the honor bestowed upon Gleason for his extraordinary courage and advocacy.

Rarity Notes
