Description
The 2018 George Washington "1789" silver matte finish medal is part of the U.S. Mint's Presidential Silver Medal Program, which produces .999 fine silver medals honoring each president in chronological order. The program launched in 2018 with Washington, appropriately beginning the series with the first President. The "1789" designation refers to Washington's inauguration year, and the matte finish — also described as an uncirculated finish — gives the medal a soft, lustrous surface distinct from the mirror-like proof finish used on other Mint products. George Washington (1732-1799) served as the first President from 1789 to 1797, having previously commanded the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolution. His presidency established foundational precedents including the formation of a cabinet of advisors, the issuance of a Neutrality Proclamation keeping the young nation out of European wars, the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion demonstrating federal authority, and the peaceful transfer of power to his successor John Adams. The silver medal measures approximately 40mm in diameter and is struck in .999 fine silver with the matte finish that became the program's signature aesthetic. The obverse features Washington's portrait, while the reverse incorporates design elements appropriate to his presidency and era. The Presidential Silver Medal Program was conceived as a way to offer collectors presidential portrait medals in precious metal at accessible prices, continuing the Mint's long tradition of presidential medal production that dates to the earliest years of the republic.
