Description
The 2013 Theodore Roosevelt .999 fine silver medal was issued by the United States Mint as part of its ongoing program of presidential silver medals. Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President (1901-1909), ranks among the most dynamic and consequential figures in American history. Ascending to the presidency at age 42 after William McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt became the youngest person to hold the office and used it as what he called a "bully pulpit" to transform American governance, conservation policy, and the nation's role on the world stage. Roosevelt's presidency saw the construction of the Panama Canal, the settlement of the Russo-Japanese War (for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize), the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act, and the creation of five national parks, eighteen national monuments, and 150 national forests. His "Square Deal" domestic program sought to balance the interests of business, labor, and consumers. He was also an avid naturalist, prolific author, rancher, explorer, and soldier who led the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. The .999 fine silver composition and modern Mint production standards give this medal exceptional visual detail. The obverse features Roosevelt's portrait, capturing his characteristic vigor, pince-nez glasses, and robust mustache. The silver medal program allows collectors to obtain presidential portrait medals in precious metal at prices far below the historical gold presentation pieces.
