Description
A waffle-cancelled quarter pattern from 2011-2012, produced during the U.S. Mint's alternative metals research program authorized by the Coin Modernization, Oversight, and Continuity Act of 2010. This experimental quarter tests an alternative composition for the 25-cent denomination, which has used the copper-nickel clad composition (copper core with 75/25 copper-nickel outer layers) continuously since the Coinage Act of 1965. While the quarter's production cost did not exceed its face value (unlike the cent and nickel), the Mint evaluated alternative compositions for all denominations as part of its comprehensive study. J-2225 was struck on a quarter-format planchet, evaluated for striking quality and electromagnetic properties, and then waffle-cancelled to prevent circulation. The quarter denomination presents unique composition challenges because of the America the Beautiful and subsequent commemorative quarter programs, which require high design detail reproduction on both sides of the coin — any alternative alloy needed to strike with sufficient detail to render the complex reverse designs used for these programs. The waffle cancellation makes this piece a fascinating artifact of modern Mint research.
Rarity Notes
R-8 (Extremely Rare). Waffle-cancelled quarter trials from the alternative metals program are very scarce. PCGS #932523.
