Description
The 2008 Proof Hawaii State Quarter is a proof quarter from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.1 million examples, making this ranked 16th of 30 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse depicts King Kamehameha I with his right arm extended toward the eight major Hawaiian Islands, with the state motto "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono." Kamehameha unified the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in the early 1800s. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. Final year of the 50 State Quarters Program. The DC and Territories program followed in 2009. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Auction record: $360 PR70 05-31-2011 eBay. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #39196.
