Description

The 2006 (W) Reverse Proof American Eagle Fifty Dollar Gold is a reverse proof Gold Eagle struck at the West Point Mint, sold only in the 2006 20th anniversary three-coin set, part of the American Eagle Fifty Dollar Gold 1986 to Date series. The Mint sold 9,996 of these reverse proofs, one in each set. The obverse is Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty from the 1907 double eagle, striding forward with a torch and an olive branch; the reverse, by Miley Busiek, shows a male eagle carrying an olive branch above a nest where a female eagle sits with their young. As a reverse proof, this coin was struck more than once on specially prepared planchets, with frosted fields and mirror-like design elements, the opposite of a regular proof. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Struck in 91.67% gold, 3% silver, 5.33% copper, weighing 33.93 grams, 32.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #89994.
