Description

The 2002 (S) Proof Silver Kennedy Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Clad and Silver Proof 1971 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 892,229 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 10% of total production. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. The Mint stopped producing half dollars for general circulation; from this point forward, the denomination was made only for collectors. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $41 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 11.3 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Cataloged as PCGS #96917.
