2001 Proof Kellogg & Co. Fifty Dollar - Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The 2001 proof Kellogg & Company fifty-dollar restrike is a modern production created using original Kellogg dies recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America. This dated restrike program, conducted in 2001, produced a carefully limited number of pieces under controlled conditions to ensure quality consistent with the original 1855 production. The 2001 date distinguishes these restrikes from the original 1855 issues and from undated restrikes in the program. The deliberate dating provides transparency for collectors and future generations, clearly identifying these as modern strikings from historic dies rather than attempts to replicate original coins. The Kellogg restrike program represents a unique event in American numismatics, as no other private territorial gold dies are known to have survived in condition suitable for producing new strikings. The S.S. Central America’s cold, dark resting place at the bottom of the Atlantic proved to be an ideal preservation environment for the die steel.
Rarity Notes
Limited production modern restrike from 1855 original dies. Collected as both a numismatic item and an S.S. Central America historical artifact.
