The 1997 (W) Jackie Robinson Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative five-dollar gold coin struck at the West Point Mint. The West Point Mint struck 5,174 uncirculated Jackie Robinson five-dollar gold coins dated 1997. The gold coin companion to the Jackie Robinson silver dollar, this $5 piece portrays Robinson beyond baseball — as a civil rights advocate and business leader who continued fighting for equality after his retirement from the sport in 1956. The obverse features a portrait of Robinson in his later years as a civil rights leader and political activist, while the reverse displays a baseball design with Robinson's life dates '1919-1972' and the inscription 'Legacy of Courage'. Designed by William C. Cousins/James Peed. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9759.
