The 1997 (W) Jackie Robinson Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of just 5,174, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. The gold coin companion to the Jackie Robinson silver dollar, this $5 piece portrays Robinson beyond baseball — as a civil rights advocate and business leader who continued fighting for equality after his retirement from the sport in 1956. The obverse features a portrait of Robinson in his later years as a civil rights leader and political activist, while the reverse displays a baseball design with Robinson's life dates '1919-1972' and the inscription 'Legacy of Courage'.
