The 1996 (W) Proof Smithsonian Institution 150th Anniversary Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a proof dollar struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. With a mintage of 8,948, this is a rare issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages.
