Description

The 1996 (W) Proof Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Commemorative Five Dollar Gold - Cauldron is a proof cent struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. With a mintage of 38,555, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 81% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Auction record: $7,638 08-10-2016 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9739.
