The 1996 (W) Proof Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Commemorative Five Dollar Gold - Cauldron is a proof five-dollar gold coin struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. The West Point Mint struck 38,871 proof Atlanta Olympic Cauldron five-dollar gold coins dated 1996. The obverse features a runner lighting the Olympic cauldron with a torch, and the reverse displays the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games mark in a laurel wreath, the reverse shared by both 1996 Atlanta $5 coins. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9739.
