SKH-1c-1996D-01 Spike Head
Error
Description
While the 1996 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent dominates spiked head discussions with nearly twenty documented varieties, the Denver Mint counterpart has yielded far fewer examples, and SKH-1c-1996D-01 stands as the sole cataloged die clash variety from the 1996-D production. This stark contrast between the P and D mint catalogs for the same year raises intriguing questions about differences in die management, press speed settings, and quality control practices between the two facilities. The Denver Mint's 1996 cent production contributed substantially to the year's total output, yet only this single spiked head has been confirmed and cataloged. Die clashes on Memorial Cents produce their characteristic spike when the reverse's Lincoln Memorial design — with its columns, steps, and entablature — contacts the obverse die during a planchet-free press cycle. The transferred design elements create a raised projection on Lincoln's portrait that varies in position and size depending on the precise alignment of the dies at the moment of contact. The D mintmark on the obverse allows for immediate facility attribution, distinguishing this variety from the extensive Philadelphia sequence. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on March 20, 2024, this variety was documented nearly three decades after the coins were originally struck, suggesting either that 1996-D cents have received less searching attention or that the Denver facility genuinely experienced fewer die clash events that year. Collectors pursuing complete date-and-mint spiked head sets regard the 1996-D as a particularly elusive target.
