The 1992 (W) Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative five-dollar gold coin struck at the West Point Mint. The West Point Mint struck 24,329 uncirculated Columbus Quincentenary five-dollar gold coins dated 1992. The gold coin in the 1992 Columbus Quincentenary program, this $5 piece features Columbus gazing toward the Americas he helped connect to Europe. The obverse features a profile portrait of Columbus facing left toward an outline map of North and South America, while the reverse displays the crest of the Admiral of the Ocean Sea above an Old World nautical chart dated 1492. Designed by T. James Ferrell/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9666.
