Description

This 70mm bronze medal by Medallic Art Company commemorates the inauguration of George Herbert Walker Bush as the forty-first President of the United States on January 20, 1989. Bush, who had served eight years as Reagan's vice president, won the presidency by defeating Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in the 1988 election. The 70mm diameter provides a generous canvas for the detailed portrait of the new president, rendered with the sculptural precision that Medallic Art Company maintained across its decades-long series of inaugural medals. Bush brought to the presidency one of the most impressive resumes in American political history: congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president. His inauguration marked the first time since 1928 that a sitting vice president had been elected president. The bronze composition in the large 70mm format was MACO's premium base-metal offering, larger and more impressive than standard-diameter medals while remaining accessible to collectors who did not wish to pay precious metal premiums. Bush's presidency would be defined by the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the successful prosecution of the Gulf War.
