Description

This 70mm bronze medal by Medallic Art Company commemorates the second inauguration of President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush on January 21, 1985. Reagan had won a historic 49-state landslide over Walter Mondale in the November 1984 election, carrying every state except Mondale's home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia. The inauguration was originally scheduled for January 20 but the public ceremony was moved indoors and to January 21 due to bitterly cold temperatures that made it the coldest inauguration day on record, with a wind chill of minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The 70mm diameter provides a substantial canvas for the detailed portraiture that Medallic Art Company maintained across its presidential series. The large format allows full appreciation of the sculptural relief and artistic quality that distinguished MACO medals from mass-produced souvenirs. Reagan's second term would see the Iran-Contra affair, the beginning of the end of the Cold War through his partnership with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and the continuation of the economic expansion that supporters called "Morning in America."

Rarity Notes
