(1984-99) Token Denver Uncirculated
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This token from the 1984-99 period was included in United States Mint Uncirculated Sets as a Denver Mint identifier. Beginning in 1984, the Mint included small tokens in its annual uncirculated coin sets to identify which coins came from which mint facility. The Denver Mint token accompanied the D-mintmark coins in the set, while a corresponding Philadelphia token accompanied the P-mintmark coins. These tokens served a practical organizational purpose, helping collectors and dealers confirm the provenance of coins within the sets. The inclusion of mint identifier tokens in uncirculated sets continued through 1999, after which the Mint transitioned to other methods of distinguishing the coins from different facilities. The tokens themselves became collectible items, though they are common given the production quantities of uncirculated sets during this period — typically ranging from several hundred thousand to over a million sets per year. The Denver token serves as documentation of the Mint's packaging and presentation practices during a period when rising public interest in coin collecting, driven partly by the 50 State Quarters Program that began in 1999, was increasing demand for official Mint products.
Rarity Notes
Common, produced in quantities matching annual Uncirculated Set production (typically 500,000-1,500,000 per year). Individual tokens are inexpensive but collected as part of complete Uncirculated Sets.
