Coin Details
Description
The 1983 Gold Hawaii Centennial Crown celebrates the 100th anniversary of King Kalakaua's historic 1883 coinage, the only official coins ever produced for the Hawaiian Kingdom. This one-ounce gold medal was produced by the Hawaiian Mint as a premium commemorative for collectors and investors, timed to capitalize on the centennial of the most famous coins in Hawaiian numismatic history. The original 1883 Kalakaua coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint in denominations of 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, and one dollar, represented the ambitious monetary program of King David Kalakaua. The coinage was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber and struck in .900 fine silver. By the centennial in 1983, those original coins had become some of the most collected pieces in Hawaiian numismatics. The Hawaiian Mint (THM), based in Honolulu, produced this and other commemorative pieces during the 1980s and 1990s, operating as a private mint producing medals, tokens, and commemorative pieces in gold, silver, and platinum for the collector market. Their products are cataloged in the Krause world coin references using X# and MB (medallic bullion) designations.
Rarity Notes
Rare. One-ounce gold pieces from the Hawaiian Mint had very limited mintages, typically 100-500 pieces. High gold content ensures most survivors remain in collector hands.
