(1979) Dollar Pattern - P-2090
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A Pollock-cataloged dollar pattern from the Susan B. Anthony dollar development program, listed separately from the Judd-numbered SBA prototypes. P-2090 may represent a composition variant, die trial, or alternative format not cataloged in the Judd reference, or it may correspond to a Judd entry under a different attribution. The Pollock reference (United States Patterns and Related Issues by Andrew W. Pollock III) sometimes catalogs pieces not included in Judd, particularly experimental or off-metal strikings that were identified or attributed after the Judd catalog was last updated. The undated or circa-1979 attribution places this piece in the final development phase of the SBA dollar, when the Mint was refining the production parameters for a coin that would enter circulation in July 1979. The SBA dollar's development process generated multiple experimental strikings as the Mint tested different combinations of diameter (ultimately 26.5mm), thickness (2.0mm), weight (8.1 grams), and edge treatment (reeded) to achieve the optimal balance between production efficiency, vending machine compatibility, and public acceptance.
Rarity Notes
R-8 (Extremely Rare). Pollock-only modern dollar patterns are very rare, with limited documentation of surviving specimens.
