1974 Proof Cent Pattern - J-2152
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A proof striking of the 1974 aluminum cent, produced alongside the business-strike J-2151 specimens as part of the Treasury's aluminum coinage evaluation program. Where the business strikes were intended for mass production testing and congressional distribution, proof specimens were struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets to showcase the design's potential appearance at its finest. The proof aluminum cent demonstrates that the lightweight alloy could accept a high-quality mirror finish with frosted devices — the "cameo" effect prized by collectors — though the aluminum surface behaved differently under polishing than the traditional bronze. Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design, which had been in production since 1959, translates to the aluminum substrate with full detail, though the lighter color and reduced weight give the coin a distinctly different character from its bronze counterpart. Proof specimens were struck in even smaller quantities than the business strikes and were primarily retained for Mint archives and senior Treasury Department officials.
Rarity Notes
R-8+ (Extremely Rare). Proof aluminum cents were struck in very small quantities, and nearly all were destroyed when the program was cancelled. Fewer specimens survive than the business-strike J-2151.
