Description
This 18-karat gold medal by Medallic Art Company of New York commemorates the inauguration of Nelson Rockefeller as Vice President in 1974. The 18K gold composition represents the most prestigious and valuable format in the Rockefeller VP medal series. Given the Rockefeller family's legendary wealth and their long association with philanthropy and the arts, the production of a gold inaugural medal was particularly fitting. Nelson Rockefeller was himself one of the great art collectors and patrons of the twentieth century, having played a central role in the development of the Museum of Modern Art and assembled one of the world's premier private art collections. The 18-karat composition — 75 percent pure gold alloyed with copper and silver for durability — meant this medal carried substantial intrinsic precious metal value in addition to its numismatic and historical significance. Medallic Art Company produced gold medals only for the most important commissions and in extremely small quantities, as the cost of materials alone placed them beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest collectors and institutions. This gold Rockefeller VP medal stands among the rarest and most valuable pieces in the entire MACO inaugural and succession medal catalog.
