Description
This large 75mm bronze medal commemorates the second inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Nance Garner on January 20, 1937. This was the first inauguration held on January 20 under the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution, which moved the date from March 4 to shorten the lame-duck period between election and assumption of office. Roosevelt won the 1936 election in one of the most lopsided landslides in American history, carrying 46 of 48 states and winning 523 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. The 75mm diameter makes this a substantial presentation piece with ample room for detailed portraiture of both Roosevelt and Garner. The bronze composition was standard for inaugural medals. Garner, a conservative Texas Democrat, would later break with Roosevelt over the court-packing plan and the third-term issue, famously describing the vice presidency as "not worth a bucket of warm spit."
