Description

This 34mm Denver Mint presidential medal features William McKinley with the notation "Inaugurated 1897." McKinley's presidency marked the beginning of the Progressive Era and American global imperialism, with the Spanish-American War of 1898 bringing the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam under American control. McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. The rarity spectrum for political campaign medals ranges from common pieces produced in large quantities for mass distribution to unique or near-unique presentation examples that command premium prices in specialized auctions. Metal composition analysis of medals using modern techniques has helped resolve attribution questions, identify previously unknown varieties, and document the materials available to medal producers in different historical periods. The Denver Mint series presents McKinley as part of the comprehensive presidential gallery for collectors and educators.
