Description
This 34mm Denver Mint presidential medal features Richard M. Nixon with the notation "Inaugurated 1973," documenting his second inauguration. Nixon's landslide re-election in 1972, winning 49 of 50 states over George McGovern, gave him one of the strongest mandates in American history. Yet within eighteen months, the Watergate scandal had destroyed his presidency — the Senate Watergate Committee hearings, the Saturday Night Massacre, the release of the White House tapes, and the Supreme Court's unanimous ruling in United States v. Nixon forced his resignation on August 9, 1974. The production of political campaign medals engaged many of the same die engravers and medal manufacturers responsible for official government and commercial commemorative pieces, ensuring high artistic quality for many issues. This medal, noting the 1973 inauguration, captures the peak of Nixon's political power immediately before his fall.
