Description
This 34mm Denver Mint presidential medal features Richard M. Nixon with the notation "Inaugurated 1969," documenting his first inauguration. Nixon won the tumultuous 1968 election over Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace in a three-way race marked by the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, urban riots, and massive antiwar protests. His first term saw the opening to China, detente with the Soviet Union, and the gradual withdrawal from Vietnam. The study of campaign medal production reveals the commercial infrastructure that supported American political campaigns, from die sinking firms and medal manufacturers to distributors and retail outlets. The Denver Mint series captures Nixon's presidential portrait at the beginning of a presidency that would end in the unprecedented resignation prompted by the Watergate scandal.
