Description
This 34mm Denver Mint presidential medal features Harry S. Truman with the notation "Inaugurated 1945." Truman assumed the presidency upon Roosevelt's death on April 12, 1945 and made some of the most consequential decisions in American history, including the use of atomic weapons against Japan, the Marshall Plan, the creation of NATO, the Berlin Airlift, and the intervention in Korea. The Denver Mint series captures Truman among his presidential peers in the standardized 34mm format. Presidential campaign medals document the evolution of American political culture, from the restrained dignity of early republic elections through the exuberant spectacle of nineteenth-century campaigns to the sophisticated marketing of modern contests. Truman left office in 1953 with low approval ratings but has since been recognized by historians as one of the most effective American presidents, particularly in his management of the early Cold War.
