1965 Half Dollar Pattern - J-2143
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A third experimental half dollar pattern from 1965, further expanding the range of compositions tested during the clad coinage transition. The designation J-2143 places this piece later in the Judd catalog sequence than J-2131 and J-2132, suggesting it may represent a later phase of experimentation or a more exotic composition variant. The 1965 half dollar transition was particularly complex because the Mint needed to produce coins in two different compositions simultaneously — silver-content pieces for circulation and copper-nickel clad test strikes for evaluation — while managing a coinage shortage so severe that the Treasury was releasing millions of coins daily from its reserves just to keep commerce functioning. Mint Director Eva Adams later recalled the 1964-1965 period as the most challenging in the Bureau of the Mint's modern history, with production facilities operating around the clock and experimental programs running in parallel with emergency coin production. Patterns like J-2143 were struck during brief windows when press time could be diverted from production runs to experimental work.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8 (Extremely Rare). Late-sequence 1965 half dollar patterns may be among the rarest of the transition-era experimental pieces.
