1964 Quarter Pattern - RB-1190, INCO
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
An INCO experimental quarter bearing the RB-1190 alloy designation from the 1964 silver crisis evaluation program. This piece is near the end of the 1100-series, one of several major alloy families explored by the International Nickel Company during its comprehensive testing campaign. The crisis that prompted these test strikes had been building throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, as industrial consumption of silver outpaced mine production. By 1964, the gap between the metal value of silver coins and their face value had narrowed to the point where continuation of silver coinage was economically unsustainable, lending urgency to INCO's testing program.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare experimental issue. Like all INCO test compositions, the RB-1190 survives in very small numbers in numismatic hands.
