1964 Quarter Pattern - RB-1170, INCO
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This INCO experimental quarter bears the RB-1170 alloy designation and was produced as part of the 1964 silver replacement testing program that ultimately transformed American coinage. The piece is struck on an experimental planchet using authentic Washington quarter dies, and its catalog number places it in the latter portion of INCO's 1100-series alloy family. The International Nickel Company's extensive testing covered not only different alloy compositions but also different manufacturing techniques for producing the clad planchets themselves, including variations in the bonding process used to join the outer nickel-copper layers to the copper core — a critical factor in the durability and counterfeit resistance of the finished coin.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. INCO experimental quarters with RB-1170 designation survive in very limited numbers, typical of the entire experimental program.
