1964 Quarter Pattern - RB-1010, INCO
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
An experimental clad quarter struck by the International Nickel Company as part of the 1964 silver replacement evaluation program. The RB-1010 alloy composition represents a slightly different formulation from the RB-1005 series, with variations in the proportions of copper and nickel in the cladding layers. These test pieces were struck at Medallic Art Company's facilities using genuine US Mint Washington quarter dies provided under Treasury authorization. Each Reed-Brenner catalog number identifies a unique combination of core alloy, cladding alloy, layer thickness, and bonding technique. The systematic progression of RB numbers through the 1000-series reflects INCO's methodical approach to alloy optimization, testing incremental changes to find the ideal balance of striking quality, durability, anti-counterfeiting characteristics, and production economics.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare experimental piece surviving in very small numbers. INCO test strikes were retained by the Treasury Department and INCO for evaluation purposes, with most eventually dispersed through government surplus or numismatic channels.
