Description
This experimental quarter test piece belongs to the RB-1005 alloy composition series produced by the International Nickel Company (INCO) through its contractor Medallic Art Company of New York in 1964. Struck using official Washington quarter dies, this piece was part of a massive evaluation program commissioned by Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon to identify viable replacements for silver in US coinage. The RB-1005 designation in the Reed-Brenner catalog identifies a specific copper-nickel alloy formulation tested for its striking characteristics, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, and visual similarity to silver coinage. INCO's experimental program produced hundreds of distinct alloy variations across multiple denominations, making this one of the most extensive metallurgical testing programs in American numismatic history. The results of this testing ultimately led to the adoption of the copper-nickel clad composition specified in the Coinage Act of 1965.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare experimental issue. Most INCO test pieces survive in single-digit quantities, with many compositions represented by unique or nearly unique examples. These pieces were produced for internal Treasury evaluation and were never intended for public distribution.
