1962 Confederate States Half Dollar - CSA Goldine, Bashlow Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1962 Bashlow Restrike of the Confederate Half Dollar in goldine is a gold-colored brass variant from Robert Bashlow's Civil War centennial restrike program. The goldine composition gives this piece a warm yellow-gold appearance that lends visual prestige to the Confederate half dollar design, evoking the precious metal aesthetic without the cost of actual gold. This restrike reproduces both sides of the original 1861 Confederate half dollar using transfer dies: the Seated Liberty obverse from the federal die that was in use at the New Orleans Mint when Confederate forces seized the facility, and the distinctive Confederate reverse featuring a shield with national emblems surrounded by an agricultural wreath of cotton, sugar cane, and other Southern crops designed by Chief Engraver A.H.M. Peterson. The goldine half dollar occupies a unique position in the Bashlow series, offering collectors a visually striking variant that differs markedly from the copper-toned bronze and white-lustrous silver versions. The warm brass color pairs effectively with the classical Seated Liberty design, creating a piece that functions equally well as a historical collectible and a display specimen. Like all Bashlow half dollar restrikes, the goldine version is scarcer than the corresponding cent restrikes.
