Description
S/S Southeast Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Type I. The obverse is also a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1946-S 10¢ WDDO-005. A very close spread towards the center shows on the Y of LIBERTY and WE TRUST. Weak wavy die gouge through the upper horizontal bar of the E in LIBERTY. Arching NE/SW die gouge on the Y of LIBERTY near the fork. Wavy E/W die gouge through the center of the B in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage B: Stage A markers still present. Die scratch south from the back of the head. Short die scratches north from the upper right of the head. Die clash on the bridge of the nose. Rim cud starting above the LI of LIBERTY. Weaker doubling. Obverse Stage C: Die scratch behind the head weaker. Die clash abraded away. Stronger rim cud above the L and I of LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A: Trumpet tail mintmark. The reverse is also a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1946-S 10¢ WDDR-001. A very strong spread to the west shows on EPU (stronger left), UNITED STATES, the torch flame, elements of the olive branch. Weaker doubling shows on the torch holder, ONE, and elements of the oak branch. N/S die scratch through the right side dot. ENE/WSW die scratch through the bottom of the last A in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: Stage A marker abraded away. N/S scratches between the left lower olive leaf and the L of PLURIBUS. Die scratches below the first U in PLURIBUS. Reverse Stage C: Secondary mintmark only shows on the bottom. Die chip above the B of PLURIBUS. First U of PLURIBUS abraded away.
