Description

The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Steel is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Lincoln Wheat Cents 1909-1958 series. The obverse features Abraham Lincoln facing right, the first real person depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays two wheat stalks framing ONE CENT, symbolizing American agriculture. Struck on recycled brass shell casings from the war effort, returning to a copper-based alloy. A few 1944 steel cents exist as transitional errors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $63K depending on grade and condition. Struck in zinc-coated steel, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #82722.
