Description

Reed-Brenner 42-70-T-2 is the second experimental wartime token pattern, testing a different design or composition from T-1. The token program explored whether a simplified, non-denomination-specific token could replace the cent in everyday transactions during the copper emergency. Each T-series pattern tested a different combination of material, size, and design elements to determine what would be most practical and publicly acceptable as a circulating substitute for the Lincoln cent. The token concept offered certain advantages over simply changing the cent's composition: tokens could be produced in any available material without the legal and political complications of altering a denomination's specifications, and they could be retired and redeemed after the emergency ended. Despite these theoretical advantages, the Mint ultimately concluded that maintaining the familiar Lincoln cent in an altered composition would cause less public confusion than introducing an entirely new circulating piece.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Very few examples of the wartime token experiments have survived.
