(1942) Cent Pattern - RB-42-70-X-3
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Reed-Brenner 42-70-X-3 is the third experimental cent pattern in the Reed-Brenner X-series from the 1942 wartime testing program. The parenthesized year reflects undocumented production dating within the period when the Philadelphia Mint was systematically evaluating alternative compositions for the Lincoln cent. Each X-series pattern tested a different material or alloy combination, expanding the range of options beyond the standard Judd-numbered metallic compositions to include additional experimental formulations that may not have received formal Judd catalog entries. The 1942 testing program evaluated candidates on multiple criteria: striking quality, wear resistance, public acceptance, vending machine compatibility, weight consistency, and most critically, the absence of copper or other strategically important metals needed for the war effort.
Rarity Notes
R-6 to R-7. Very rare. Reed-Brenner experimental patterns survive in limited quantities.
