1938 Medal Honeycutt-998-59 var Silvered Copper
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1938 silvered copper medal cataloged as Honeycutt-998-59 variant features a silver wash over a copper base, creating the appearance of a silver medal at a lower production cost. The silvered copper composition distinguishes this from the gilt copper version (PCGS #971363) struck from the same dies, providing collectors with a composition variety within the Honeycutt-998-59 designation. Both silvered and gilt versions were produced during the Philippine Commonwealth period under President Manuel L. Quezon, when the islands were preparing for independence from the United States. The silvered copper finish would have been more susceptible to wear and environmental toning than solid silver, and surviving examples in high grades are particularly desirable. This medal, paired with its gilt copper counterpart, illustrates the common practice of striking medals in multiple compositions to create variety for collectors and to offer pieces at different price points.
Rarity Notes
Silvered copper, Honeycutt-998-59 variant. Companion piece to the gilt copper version. Silvered finishes are often more worn due to the thin plating layer.
