Description
This 1937 Washington quarter features a Doubled Die Obverse (DDO), one of the earliest known doubled dies in the series. The doubling is visible on the obverse, primarily affecting the date, the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto, and the "LIBERTY" inscription. Doubled die obverse varieties result from a misalignment during the hubbing process, where the working die receives a second impression slightly offset from the first, creating a doubled image on every coin struck from that die. The 1937 DDO is a recognized variety sought by Washington quarter specialists and die variety collectors. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mint mark. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3mm diameter, reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Scarce variety. The doubled die obverse is found on a small percentage of the total 1937 production of 19,696,000 pieces. Actively sought by variety collectors. Premium examples with strong, clear doubling command significantly higher prices than standard issues.
