Description

The 1932 medal Baker-900A in bronze is the standard version of the "Proclaim Liberty" bicentennial medal. Bronze composition made this accessible to a broader audience than the silver version, while preserving the same design celebrating the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth. The 1932 bicentennial was the largest Washington commemoration since the 1876 centennial, generating enormous public interest and commercial production. Baker-900A in bronze represents the most widely distributed version of this particular bicentennial design. The "Proclaim Liberty" theme connected the 1932 celebration to both the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell, two of the most powerful symbols of American freedom. The demand for Washington commemorative pieces was particularly intense during centennial celebrations, with the 1876 Centennial, 1882-1883 evacuation anniversaries, and 1887 Constitutional Centennial generating large numbers of medallic issues.
