Description
The 1931 medal Baker-K454 in silver at 68mm is the precious-metal version of the Yorktown sesquicentennial medal. Silver composition and large format indicate a premium presentation piece produced in very limited quantities for distinguished recipients at the sesquicentennial ceremonies. The silver Yorktown medal represents the highest tier of sesquicentennial commemoration. Franco-American diplomatic traditions associated with the Yorktown anniversary influenced the production of silver presentation pieces for French and American dignitaries. Silver versions of the Baker-K454 are significantly scarcer than the bronze and highly prized by collectors. Research into Washington medals continues to uncover new varieties and previously undocumented pieces, as the extensive production over more than two centuries has left a body of material that defies complete cataloging.
