Description
The 1931 (D) Mercury Dime is a dime produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Mercury Dimes 1916-1945 series. With a mintage of 1.3 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 20% of total production. The obverse features young Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought — often called the "Mercury" dime despite not depicting the Roman god and the reverse displays a Roman fasces — a bundle of rods with an axe — entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing strength through unity tempered by peace. Depression-era low mintages across all mints. The 1931-D and 1931-S are semi-key dates. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $15 to $442 depending on grade and condition.
