Description
This bronze medal (Miller-45) was issued by the American Numismatic Society to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride on April 18-19, 1775. The 63mm medal was designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Italian-born sculptor best known for the Peace Dollar (1921-1935), and struck by the Medallic Art Company. The obverse features Revere's bust facing left, based on a portrait by Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Mémin, with a sugar bowl modeled from one actually crafted by Revere that was on loan to the Metropolitan Museum from Judge Alphonso Clearwater. The reverse depicts Revere standing beside his horse, awaiting the lantern signal from the Old North Church steeple. Each piece was individually numbered. Mintage: at least 65 silver ($15 each, later reduced to $10) and 173 bronze ($5 each). Despite extensive promotion — over 5,000 circulars distributed — the medal was a commercial disappointment, contributing to the ANS's eventual reduction in medal production. No gold specimens were struck, though Judge Clearwater considered it.
